Designation A1069/A1069M − 11Standard Specification forLaser-Fused Stainless Steel Bars, Plates, and Shapes1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A1069/A1069M; the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval. A superscript epsilon indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers laser-fused stainless steel bars,plates, and shapes of structural quality for use in bolted orwelded structural applications.1.2 Shapes covered in this specification include those clas-sified in Article 3.1.2 of Specification A6/A6M and those thatare made from two or more shapes or plates.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Ordering Information4.1 It is the responsibility of the purchaser to specify allrequirements that are necessary for material ordered under thisspecification. Such requirements may include but are notlimited to the following4.1.1 Name of structural product plate, shape, bar, or sheetpiling.4.1.2 Shape designation and applicable dimensions includ-ing size, thickness, width, diameter, and length.4.1.3 Type or UNS designation as specified in Table 1 ofSpecification A240/A240M.4.1.4 Quantity weight or number of pieces.4.1.5 Special packaging, marking, and loading for shipmentrequirements, if any.4.1.6 ASTM specification designation and edition year ifother than the latest edition.4.1.7 Condition, whether stress-relieved, heat treated, or aswelded.4.1.8 Finish.4.1.9 Supplementary Requirements, when invoked.4.1.10 Preparation for delivery.4.1.11 Marking requirements.4.1.12 Special requirements.NOTE 1A typical ordering description is as follows 5000 lb 2300kg, Angle, L441⁄2 in. L100 100 13mm, laser fused, 20 ft 6 min length, Type 304L, ASTM Specification AXXXX dated ____.5. Materials and Manufacture5.1 Condition5.1.1 Parent materials shall be in accordance to the require-ments of Specifications A240/A240M.5.1.2 Laser-fused section materials shall conform to therequirements of Specifications A276 or A479/A479M.5.1.3 Bars and shapes shall be in the as-fused condition.5.1.4 Fusion weld process shall comply with ISO 15614-11and ISO 15609-4 standards.5.1.5 The quality levels of welded joints shall be in accor-dance with ISO 13919-1 standard. If not otherwise specified,quality level B of ISO 13919-1 standard shall be met.5.1.6 The tensile strength of the fusion weldment conductedon coupons excised from the laser fused stainless steel plates,as shown in Fig. 1, shall meet or exceed those specified inSpecifications A240/A240M, A276,orA479/A479M whenany of those materials are specified in the purchase order.Tensile testing and specimen dimensions shall be in accordancewith Test Methods A370.5.1.7 Bend tests in accordance with Article 14 of TestMethods A370 shall be conducted for evaluating the ductilityof the fusion weldment. Test coupons shall be excised from thelaser fused stainless steel plates in accordance with Fig. 1. Theinside diameter for root bend test specimens shall meet thevalues stipulated in the application specification, or thespecific requirements of the purchase order. Root bend testsshall be conducted, removing any flash or melt-through at theroots of the weld, and shall be in accordance with either TestMethods E190 or E290, depending on the thickness of thematerial and the purchaser’s application. Chemical Composition6.1 The steel shall conform to the requirements for chemicalcomposition specified in Table 1 of Specifications A240/A240M, A276 and A479/A479M.6.2 Methods and practices relating to chemical analysisrequired by this specification shall be in accordance with TestMethods, Practices, and Terminology A751.7. Mechanical Properties7.1 The product shall conform to the mechanical test re-quirements specified in Table 2 of Specifications A240/A240M, A276,orA479/A479M.8. Dimensions, Mass, and Permissible Variations8.1 The permitted variations in dimensions shall conform tothe requirements of Section 9 of Specification A484/A484M.9. Quality, Finish, and Appearance of the Laser-FusedProduct9.1 The product shall be of uniform quality consistent withgood manufacturing and inspection practices. Imperfections inthe product shall be of such a nature or degree for the type andquality ordered that they shall not adversely affect the forming,machining, or fabrication of finished parts.10. Packaging, Marking, and Loading for Shipment10.1 Packaging, marking, and loading for shipment shall bein accordance with Practices A700.10.2 When specified in the contract or order and for directprocurement by or direct shipment to the U.S. Government,marking for shipment, in addition to requirements specified inthe contract or order, shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-129 for military agencies and with Federal Standard No. 123for civil agencies.11. Keywords11.1 joining; laser-fusion; laser-weld; plates; shapes;stainlessSUPPLEMENTARY REQUIREMENTSThe following standardized supplementary requirements are for use when desired by the purchaser.Those that are considered suitable for use with each material specification are listed in thespecification. Other tests may be performed by agreement between the supplier and the purchaser.These additional requirements shall apply only when specified in the order, in which event thespecified tests shall be made by the manufacturer or processor before shipment of the material.Charpy V-Notch Impact Test for Structural ShapesS1.1 Charpy V-notch impact tests shall be conducted inaccordance with Specifications A673/A673M and Test Meth-ods A370.S1.2 The frequency of testing, the test temperature to beused, and the absorbed energy requirements shall be asspecified on the order. Unless otherwise specified in thepurchase order, the minimum average absorbed energy for eachtest shall be 20 ft lbf [27 J] and the test temperature shall be70F [20C].Drop-Weight Test for Material 0.625 in. [16 mm] and Overin ThicknessS2.1 Drop-weight tests shall be made in accordance withTest Method E208. The specimens shall represent the materialin the final condition of heat treatment. Agreement shall bereached between the purchaser and the manufacturer or pro-cessor as to the number of pieces to be tested and whether amaximum nil-ductility transition NDT temperature is man-datory or if the test results are for information only.Intergranular Corrosion TestS3.1 For shapes fabricated from austenitic stainless steels,tests for the presence of undesirable precipitate phases orsusceptibility of the weld joint to intergranular corrosion shallbe made by cutting and fabricating coupons obtained from thewelded test pieces, and exposing them to one or more of thepractice reagents described in Practices A262. The purchasershall prescribe which particular practices shall be followed inthe purchase order.S3.2 For shapes fabricated from duplex austenitic/ferriticstainless steels, tests for the presence of undesirable phases inthe weld joint shall be made by cutting and fabricating couponsobtained from the welded test pieces, and testing them per therequirements of Test Methods A923.
