Designation A 1026 – 03Standard Specification forAlloy Steel Structural Shapes for Use in Building Framing1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A 1026; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon e indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers Grades 50 [345] and 65 [450]alloy steel “W” shapes rolled wide flange shapes intended foruse in building framing. This steel is a low carbon, copper-containing, alloy steel with a bainitic microstructure that isdeveloped through the control of chemical composition and theuse of thermo-mechanical rolling followed by air cooling. Thecopper is present to enhance precipitation strengthening.1.2 When the steel is to be welded, a welding proceduresuitable for the grade of steel and intended use or service is tobe utilized. See Appendix X3 of Specification A 6/A 6M forinformation on weldability.1.3 The shapes are not intended to be galvanized or to bepost-weld heat treated at temperatures exceeding 750 F [400C].1.4 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, theSI values are shown in brackets. The values stated in eachsystem are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system is tobe used independently of the other, without combining valuesin any way.1.5 The text of this specification contains notes or footnotes,or both, that provide explanatory material; such notes andfootnotes, excluding those in tables and figures, do not containany mandatory requirements.2. General Requirements3.1 Product furnished under this specification shall conformto the requirements of the current edition of Specification A6/A 6M for the ordered product, unless a conflict exists, inwhich case this specification shall prevail.4. Materials and Manufacture4.1 The steel shall be made to fine grain practice.4.2 The shapes shall be produced by a controlled processthat incorporates thermo-mechanical rolling followed by aircooling to result in a precipitation-strengthened bainitic micro-structure.5. Chemical Composition5.1 The heat analysis shall conform to the requirementsgiven in Table 1.5.2 The product analysis shall conform to the requirementsgiven in Table 1 subject to the variations in product analysisthat are permitted in Specification A 6/A 6M.5.3 Where the amount of tin is less than 0.02 , it shall bepermissible for the heat or product analysis, whichever isapplicable, to be reported as “ 0.02 .”6. Mechanical Properties6.1 Tension TestThe product as represented by the testspecimens shall conform to the requirements for tensile prop-erties given in Table 2.6.2 Impact Test6.2.1 Charpy V-notch tests shall be made in accordance withSpecification A 673/A 673M, Frequency H.6.2.2 Test results for full-size test specimens shall meet aminimum average value of 40 ftlbf [54 J] at 70 F [21 C] ora lower test temperature as specified in the purchase order.7.
