Designation A 1019/A 1019M – 01Standard Specification forClosed Rib Steel Pipe with Diameter of 36 in. [900 mm] orLess, Polymer Precoated for Sewers and Drains1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A 1019/A 1019M; the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval. A superscript epsilon e indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers polymer precoated, closed ribsteel pipe, intended for use for storm water drainage, under-drains, the construction of culverts, and similar uses. Pipecovered by this specification is not normally used for theconveyance of sanitary or industrial wastes. The steel sheetused in fabrication of the pipe has a polymer protective coatingover a metallic coating of zinc.1.2 The polymer precoating provides extra protection of thebase metal against corrosion or abrasion, or both, in addition tothat provided by the metallic coating. Severe environments arelikely to cause corrosion problems to accessory items such ascoupling band hardware that does not have a polymer coatingunless supplemental protection is provided. Additional protec-tion for polymer precoated steel pipe is available by use ofcoatings applied after fabrication of the pipe as described inSpecification A 849.1.3 This specification does not include requirements forbedding, backfill, or the relationship between earth cover loadand sheet thickness of the pipe. Experience with drainageproducts has shown that successful performance depends uponthe proper selection of rib depth, sheet thickness, type ofbedding and backfill, controlled manufacture in the plant, andcare in installation. The installation procedure is described inPractice A 798/A 798M.1.4 This specification is applicable to orders in eitherinch-pound units as A 1019, or in SI units as A 1019M.Inch-pound units and SI units are not necessarily equivalent. SIunits are shown in brackets in the text for clarity, but they arethe applicable values when the material is ordered to A 1019M.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Materials and Manufacture6.1 Steel Sheet for PipeAll pipe fabricated under thisspecification shall be formed from polymer precoated sheetconforming to Annex A1 of this specification.6.1.1 The polymer coating shall be applied to steel sheethaving a metallic coating of zinc.6.2 Steel Sheet for Coupling BandsThe sheet used infabricating coupling bands shall be the same as that specifiedfor fabrication of the pipe furnished under the order, with thesame polymer coating and same metallic coating.6.3 Hardware for Coupling BandsBolts and nuts forcoupling bands shall conform to the following requirementsBolts NutsFor A 1019 pipe A 307 A 563, Grade A[For A 1019M pipe] [F 568, Class 4.6] [A 563M, Class 5]6.3.1 Bolts, nuts, and other threaded items used with cou-pling bands shall be zinc coated by one of the followingprocesses hot-dip process as provided in Specification A 153;electroplating process as provided in Specification B 633,Class Fe/Zn 8; or mechanical process as provided in Specifi-cation B 695, Class 8. Other hardware items used with cou-pling bands shall be zinc coated by one of the followingprocesses hot-dip process as provided in Specification A 153;electroplating process as provided in Specification B 633,Class Fe/Zn 25; or mechanical process as provided in Speci-fication B 695, Class 25.6.4 GasketsIf gaskets are used in couplings, they shall bea band of expanded rubber that meets the requirements ofSpecification D 1056 for the “RE” closed cell grades, O-ringsmeeting the requirements of Specification C 443, or othermaterial approved by the purchaser.7. Fabrication7.1 General RequirementsPipe shall be fabricated in fullcircular cross section.7.1.1 The pipe shall be fabricated with essentially closedhelical ribs projecting outward, with a continuous lock seamextending from end to end of each length of pipe.7.2 Wall ProfileThe dimensions and spacing of the ribsshall be in accordance with Table 2 for the nominal sizeindicated on the order. The ribs shall be spaced such that, afterevery third rib, a wider spacing is provided to accommodatethe lock seam.7.2.1 The maximum spacing of the lock seam, measuredperpendicular to the lock seam, shall be 5-3⁄4 in. [146 mm].NOTE 1The nominal dimensions and properties for pipe wall profilesare given in Practice A 796/A 796M.7.3 Helical Lock SeamsThe lock seam shall be formed inthe flat zone of the pipe wall midway between each pair of ribshaving the wider spacing described in 7.2.7.3.1 The edges of the sheets within the cross section of thelock seam shall lap at least5⁄32in. The lapped surfacesshall be in tight contact. The profile of the sheet shall includea retaining offset adjacent to the 180 fold as described inAASHTO T 249 of one sheet thickness on one side of the lockseam, or one-half sheet thickness on both sides of the lockseam, at the fabricator’s option. There shall be no visiblecracks in the metal, loss of metal-to-metal contact, or excessiveangularity on the interior of the 180 fold of metal at thecompletion of forming the lock seam. Damage to the polymercoating or the underlying metallic coating is subject to repair inconformance with Section 11.7.3.2 Specimens cut from production pipe normal to andacross the lock seam shall develop the tensile strength listed inTable 3, when tested in accordance with AASHTO T 249M.8. Pipe Requirements8.1 Pipe DimensionsThe nominal diameter of the pipeshall be as stated in the order, selected from the sizes listed inTable 1. The size of closed rib profiles that are standard foreach size of pipe are also shown in Table 1. The average insidediameter of circular pipe, when measured on the inside of thepipe, shall not be less than the nominal diameter and shall notexceed the nominal diameter by more than3⁄16 in. [5 mm].8.2 Sheet ThicknessSheet thickness shall be as specifiedby the purchaser from the specified sheet thicknesses listed inAnnex A1.9. Coupling Bands9.1 Types of Coupling BandsField joints for each type ofclosed rib pipe shall maintain pipe alignment during construc-tion and prevent infiltration of fill material during the life of theinstallation. Coupling bands shall be of the following typessmooth, internal sleeve-type coupling with optional supple-mental external coupling; and bands of special design. Thetype of coupling furnished shall be the option of the fabricatorunless the type is specified in the order.NOTE 2Pipe joints are classified in accordance with their ability toresist shear, moment, and tensile forces as described in Practice A 798/A 798M and identified as “stab joints,” “standard joints,” and “specialjoints.” Classification shall be determined by analysis or test.9.2 RequirementsCoupling bands shall be fabricated tolap on an equal portion of each of the pipe sections to beconnected. The coupling band sheet thickness shall be no lessthan the sheet thickness of the pipe to be connected.9.2.1 Smooth internal sleeve-type couplings shall be close-fitting to hold the pipe firmly in alignment and shall contain adevice so that it will lap equally on the two pipes being joined.Annular deformations3⁄8 in. [9.5 mm] deep shall be permittedin the coupling band for seating gaskets as described in 9.2.2and 9.2.5. The overall coupling width dimension measuredalong the axis of the pipe shall be a minimum of 6 in. [150mm] for pipe diameters of 24 in. or greater, and shall be aminimum of 4 in. [100 mm] for smaller diameters.9.2.2 Where infiltration or exfiltration is a concern, the useof supplemental external couplings with gaskets shall beconsidered. Supplemental external couplings shall be of steelhaving the same nominal thickness as the pipe being joined.The ends of the bands shall lap or be fabricated to form atightly closed joint after installation. The overall width of thecoupler shall be a minimum of 8 in.
